I was delighted to find this underappreciated gem on Kindle. It is every bit as powerful and unsettling as I remember from its 1995 release. Twelve year old Lola Hart chronicles her coming of age in Manhattan amidst economic ruin, open warfare in the streets, and the disintegration of her family. It’s rather baffling how little critical attention this received when it first came out. Check it out.
